Blacks of Bacton comprises three family owned companies headquartered at Bacton and operating from various sites across Suffolk, mostly in the Mid-Suffolk area. Our business is predominantly farming but we also control and lease a portfolio of both commercial and residential properties, as well as running a training company: Aurelia Ltd. The family have been farming from the same base at Bacton for over a century. The main holding company, David Black & Son Ltd., has existed for more than 60 years.
Our core business is a mix of arable farming and pig rearing, with a high level of recycling of resources. Wheat and oilseed rape grown on the farm are processed externally, and some of their produce (animal feed and straw) provides essential raw materials for the pig rearing operation which, in turn provides nutrients and organic matter in the form of muck for crop production.
As well as farming on our own account we have a number of clients who we farm for. Our arable rotation includes, wheat, barley, sugar beet, oilseed rape, environmental margins and cover crops. Bacton Pigs Ltd., a subsidiary, keeps a small sow herd and rears pigs for a major processor supplying the UK market. All our products support the British Red Tractor Assurance Schemes; we are also registered with FWAG, the RSPCA Freedom Foods and GWCT.
Over the years, we have adapted our business to meet the changing rural economic, environmental and social demands and are committed to meeting the needs of our customers and clients.
As farming economics have become more challenged, we have diversified some of our resources to non-farming businesses and now host a thriving business hub as well as a public weighbridge within our main yard at Red House Farm, Bacton. Our recently acquired subsidiary company Aurelia Ltd provide dedicated Operator Training and certification for most categories of Construction Plant, Powered Access Platforms and Industrial Forklift Trucks as well as Lorry Loader and Slinger Signaller.
